Today after work I picked up a 1x12 mdf board to use on the
stairway.
I got to the house and we tried to figure out the best way to put it on. I had the idea to nail some molding to the wall to hold the mdf at the right height and then cut the sheetrock off so the mdf could be flush against the rimboard so the flush cutoff blade on the router could cut it off. We found that it worked well but we forgot that the router bit was cutting the wrong side out so there is extra space. I'll either leave it as is, or get another mdf and cut it with the jig saw so it fits tight. On the oak, we moved the molding down a few more inches so we wouldn't waste any oak. We cut the bottom angle and put a nail in it to hold it in place. We tried using the router on a test piece of wood and found that it didn't cut it well enough because of chatter and the stair boards and backing just was not smooth enough. We ended up tracing it with a pencil and using the jigsaw to cut it out. It turned out pretty good. With some 50 grit sandpaper on the edges to clean things up a bit it will work really nice. |
